Authors: Nikhil Saini and Obaid

Learn how a side gig in addition to the primary job helps a person supplement their income.

Moonlighting is when an individual works multiple jobs in order to increase their income. For example, someone can hold a regular 9-5 job and then take on extra work such as tutoring or freelance writing in their free time. Another example is when someone works two different part-time jobs in order to make ends meet.

Another form of moonlighting is when someone takes on a job that is different from their regular job, such as a musician teaching violin lessons on the side or a lawyer who takes on some web design work. Whatever form of moonlighting an individual chooses, it can be a great way to supplement their income and gain additional experience.

Moonlighting has sparked a grand-debate in the work-world. While some are calling it unethical and something that breaches contractual obligations others are supporting it as the right of young and low paid professionals to earn extra and diversify their earnings. Many believe that the trend of moonlighting was initiated by work from home practices during the pandemic.

Moonlighting can provide a number of advantages to individuals looking to increase their income. One of the primary benefits is that moonlighting can provide an increased income without sacrificing the stability of a full-time job.

Additionally, moonlighting can also be beneficial for increasing skills and expertise in a field, as well as providing an opportunity to explore different industries and build a more diverse professional network. Moonlighting can also provide flexibility in terms of hours and location, allowing individuals to pursue what interests them without overworking themselves.

Finally, moonlighting can also be a great source of personal satisfaction, as individuals have the chance to pursue a passion or hobby while also earning money.

What’re the problems with MoonLighting?

We’ll understand from the following:

1. Effect on Productivity.

Working an additional job can have a harmful knock-on effect on an employee’s performance at their main employer. Additionally, beyond fatigue, an employee’s work performance may suffer because of the additional responsibilities they have acquired through their other job.

2. Conflict of Interest

Potentially, the greatest risk to an employer from a worker’s moonlighting is if their choice of secondary work poses a conflict of interest with the company. One way this can occur is through employees working for competitors as in the Wipro case, where an employee’s knowledge of confidential information, trade secrets, client lists and company processes can compromise the entire organization if they intentionally or mistakenly reveal this information to the rival.

3. Burden on Assets and ManPower.

Additionally, employees use company’s precious assets for their second job which not only poses a conflict of interest but also harms the company’s operating expenses. This could include an employee using company-provided goods such as a work car, mobile phone etc.
